   The Bluebird Restaurant Replica

          By: Bob Marcolese

When I was a child growing up, I had a terrible problem. You see, whenever my mother would take me with her shopping, I would shoot straight for the toy department. That wasn't the problem. The problem was that if I found a toy, that I had to have, I would rant and rave and exclaim, "You have got to buy this for me now, Mommy!  It's the last one!"

We're older now...I wonder if you've ever made a purchase thinking..."If I don't buy this now, the opportunity will be gone! It's the last one!" I can tell you that in later years I resisted the thought and temptation, especially when my wife wanted to see Rosemary Clooney a few years back at Abravanel Hall which was the last, and unfortunately, the final time she would ever perform in Utah.

      So here's your last chance!

The Bluebird Restaurant replica is the start of the "Village of Logan" Series (the next replica that we are working on is that of the restored, historic county courthouse at 200 North and Main, available at its grand opening.) The Logan Downtown Alliance made only 300 of these extremely detailed pieces. Architectural Nexus, Incorporated and Photographic Images, both Historic Downtown Logan businesses, spent countless volunteer hours to get the exact measurements and photos to reproduce what you see. We now have less than 150 left of the original 300.

When we made these available for the first time, I was selling them on the sidewalk during last summer's 2004 Great American Sidewalk Festival. A woman approached me, and not only was fascinated with what it was, but the fact that these replicas illuminate, by way of a light bulb in them. She said her mother got engaged in the Bluebird Restaurant years ago, and she was quite fond of the memories. The woman left, but later returned saying, "I couldn't let this opportunity get by...I have to buy this for my mother for Christmas." As she was writing her check I asked, "Why is this such an 'urgent' purchase?"

The woman said her mother, well into her 80's (I'm now sorry I can't recall her name), grew up in Logan, but was now very frail and ill. Her husband was deceased and she could not care for herself any longer. The daughter with whom I was speaking to was from Raleigh, North Carolina, and  was here in town for a few weeks to dismantle her mother's household and move her back, reluctantly, to live her final time in North Carolina. The daughter wanted to use the Bluebird replica as a night light to put next to her mother's bedside nightstand in order to remind her of Logan, a place she would never see again, and a happier time. If that one replica brings joy into that old woman's heart on Christmas, this whole project was worth it!
